It's so hard to compare. I feel Cruijff, Zidane, Messi and even Cristiano Ronaldo are better as Maradonna, but tbh it's no use as it's about comparing different era's. Di Stefano also might be a big forgotten, because it has been a while but in the early days he was the master. Almost impossible to compare him to a player as Messi.

Yep. It's all relative.

I would have Jimmy Greaves very high on mine, yet hes not even listed.

Neymar?

I could think of 30 players in his position that are better than him!

Very good list, I could see myself agreeing with most of it. Although I do have to agree with SteveHarle here, Neymar sticks out like a sore thumb for me as well.

Good effort but a lot of those lists will have plenty of scope for clickbait/likes hence the appearance of Beckham, Neymar and even Henry. Beckham was the 4th best midfielder of a midfield of Keane, Giggs, Scholes and Beckham.

Alas it is very recency biased. Understandable as we have very little info, video and stats on almost everyone playing before the seventies.

I like what you did with the list though!

Notwithstanding this comment may have been perched on the end of a fishing rod, the fact that Beckham is ahead of Charlton further confirms what AJ says today - recency bias is so hard to avoid. And the very first response from CMCZ carries a lot of weight too: while Maradona was light years ahead of most players of his era, put that Maradona into a top team today and he wouldn't stand out in the same way. But... put Maradona with today's training, nutritional knowledge, media-management etc into a team today and he absolutely would be one of the best.

Herein lies the problem: take any individual who stood out in a given era, and surely the same would apply. Matthias Sindelaar is perhaps an obvious omission from the list. In the condition he was in durong the 1930s he would have been light years behind by the 1960s, but if he has grown up and developed in the 2000s there is no obvious reason to think he wouldn't be a star in today's game. You could say the same of Telmo Zarra, Billy Wright, Sandor Kocsis, or more recently someone like Cafu or Lahm, or maybe even Zlatan.

No fishing at all.

Teofilio Cubillas another you'd fancy should have showed up somewhere.

Interesting points in methods then Vs methods now. The Brazil teams from 1950s to the mid 80s were thought to be on a complete different level to every other team in terms of preparation at the time. They obviously had massive talent but you'd wonder how much better they were if the others were on a similar level or they on the same level. For all Pele's magic moments a far chunk of his highlights are due to him being physically superior to the opposing defenders as much as anything.

Well I am happy to let that one slide; it's not an important point anyway!

The one thing you can say for Pele is he would the best player in the best national team over a relatively extended period. Sure, the Brazilian squad took along doctors (and even a dentist) to toournaments starting with the 1958 World Cup as they fought to banish the memory of the 1950 embarrassment. But I don't think that was something particularly ingrained in club football in Brazil at the time, so it's maybe the 1950s version of Hoddle and Eileen Drury, only with a bit more meaning.

I don't know much about Cubillas other than his carzy free kick goal and the fact that he is a Peruvian legend, but I guess it's a fair shout. Maybe one of our resident Poles might wish to comment on Grzegorz Lato or Zbigniew Boniek as players who are unfairly overlooked in these kind of discussions. Certainly when I was growing up in the early/mid-80s it was Boniek, Platini and Maradona who were the global superstars of the game in the preiod between the 82 and 86 World Cups when I first became aware of football and footballers. And at home, despite Liverpool's unyeilding success, I think the consensus was that Bryan Robson was the best from these shores (with Rush, Dalglish, Hoddle just behind).

Boniek is a great shout. Another Pole, Lewandowski, will miss these polls/rankings in future due to missing out on FIFAs main popularity contest the past 4-5 years. Personally, I think the 90s Serie A is underrepresented. At the time it was a close to a World League that there ever has been. It was so defensive that any goals scored were goals scored were "goal of the month" candidates. The main negative was longevity I guess, 3 seasons seasons seem to be upper limit of most players staying at a club.

Gunnar Nordahl probably worth a mention somewhere too.

Regarding the Brazilians, Tim Vickery talks about it a lot, their physios were using methods only adopted in the last 20 years elsewhere. Plus they had nutritionists with a similar advanced level of thinking. I'd say back then any nutritrionist was unheard of. Even in the late 90s Alan Shearer was still eating tinned baked beans as a pre match meal. Most club and national sides were on a "no beer 3 days before the game" type prep. Their camps were a few weeks longer than most other nations too.

I'd have loved to see some prime Brian Robson, even by 1991/92 you could see the desire but the physical side wasn't cooperating

Hello,

I find this ranking rather correct. But it must be said that everyone has their own preferences.
