Did you just call me creepy?
No, he called you an alibino.
In that case he has a point.

Feck sake - we are falling apart at exactly the wrong time!

Wrapping up the Serie B season

In which four teams compete for three automatic promotion spots...

Image

When we moved into May there were just three games remaining and four teams were still competing for the three automatic promotion spots, not to mention the league title.

Now it would seem that league leaders Here2Win79's Catania - despite Ben Seghir being back from his injury - were suffering from nervousness or insecurity during their title run-in as they only narrowly defeated Pisa SC with Seghir scoring the crucial first goal.

Image

Now runners-up Kanai's Brindisi were finally without major injury problems, apart from Cher Ndour being out for one week, and they more or less comfortably defeated Udinese away from home, thanks to goals scored by their two midfielders Ethan Mbappé and Florian Wirtz.

Image

AJ's third-placed AlbinoLeffe, on the other hand, still had some injury problems to contend with. Gabriel Martinelli was out for two weeks and Hato was out for ten days. Now that doesn't fully explain why AlbinoLeffe suffered a shock loss at Dermotron's Poggibonsi, but of course it was just what Xeno's Carrarese had been hoping for!

Image

However, nerves were taking over at Carrarese who had to play their game without Bitshiabu (out for 10 days), Fofana (1 week) and Puyol (1 week) and when Dickmann was fouled by Gutiérrez backing into him SPAL were awarded a late penalty...

Image

And in that same first weekend ClaretChris72's sixth-placed Pro Vercelli, who have nothing to play for, lost their game at Spezia...

Image

Image

Image

The very next week Catania, clearly still suffering from nerves, were held to stalemate by Palermo. Obviously, Bremer being sent off for squaring up to De Luca early in the first half made all the difference in this match.

Image

Brindisi, on the other hand, won their second game as well - with both goals scored by midfielders again - and so their morale was boosted with only the away game at Catania to be played now.

Image

And AJ's AlbinoLeffe managed to defeat Empoli in a rather spectacular six-goal thriller - with three goals scored in the final ten minutes - to secure the all-important third automatic promotion spot, even though Carrarese won their away game against Venezia.

And so on the last day of the season Serie B leaders Brindisi played runners-up Catania away from home in the title-deciding match and it must be said that Catania had finally overcome their nerves and they put on quite an impressive first-half performance.

However, about twenty minutes after Ben Seghir had once more scored the opening goal for the home side Pafundi was sent off for pushing Wirtz in the chest! Now this happened just seven minutes before the half-time whistle was blown and so Catania had to play the remaining 52 minutes with ten men.

And sure enough, in the second half Brindisi managed to turn the game around. It was Florian Wirtz who bagged the equaliser and Will Lankshear scored with seven minutes remaining and so Brindisi secured the title in their rivals' backyard!

Our luck runs out at the end, although two red cards in our last two games suggest I stopped payments to the Charity Of Retired Referees and Under Paid ‘Talians at just the wrong time. Congratulations through gritted teeth to Champion Kanai and creepy Albino AJ. See you in Serie A.
Samsami please inform Pafundi that his summer holidays are cancelled and I expect him to run around Sicily as penance. He can start with the area around Palermo’s stadium. Where the wise guys like to hang.

Some effort from Xeno's boys who didn't stop until the end but Alas - not enough

Congrats to those who join us in the top league and surely next season will see the other 3 join automatically?!

Wrapping up the Serie A season

In which our teams compete for European qualification and particularly for the three Champions League qualification spots...

Image

Unlike last year there will only be three Italian representatives in the Champions League next season and so the four remaining games in May were especially crucial for marimo's Alma Juventus Fano, evesham's US Triestina and Redknapp69's US Fiorenzuola.

Now on 7th May marimo's third-placed Fano were held to stalemate by evesham's fourth-placed Triestina - and neither side could possibly be fully satisfied with that draw - while Redknapp69's fifth-placed Fiorenzuola defeated none other than league leaders AC Milan at the Velodromo Attilio Pavesi!

Image

Image

The other three teams all won their respective games which means that Spectral's Avellino remain in the best position to qualify for Europa League football. On paper they could even still qualify for Champions League football, but with three games remaining and the gap with third-placed Fano being six points that would take nothing less than a miracle.

Image

A week later, on 14th of May, Fano crushed the new league leaders Atalanta Bergamo while their rivals Triestina demolished Napoli and Fiorenzuolo won the challenging away game at AS Roma. The race is on!

Image

Meanwhile, sixth-placed Avellino did well to hold Milan to a goalless draw, enough to stay in sixth place which will be needed to qualify for Europa league football. Casertana, Arezzo and Lazio are also still in the race though.

Image

Now the two top teams have both been dropping quite a few points lately so with two game remaining it suddenly seems that anything is possible again!

However, first evesham's Triestina had to play Spectral's Avellino in the Coppa Italia Final at The Olimpico in Rome!

Image

Now Triestina were slight favourites with the bookmakers but on the day Avellino were the better side and it was Mathys Tel who made the difference by bagging a brace on the day when it really mattered!

Image

Image

Three days after the Coppa Italia Final third-placed Fano suffered a shock loss at Internazionale with Gaetano Oristanio scoring a penalty and netting a last-minute goal.

Image

And while fourth-placed Triestina were held to a 1-1 draw by league leaders Atalanta, Fiorenzuola continued their winning run by narrowly defeating Juventus at home.

Image

As a result, the top of the table was now tighter than ever, at least when it comes to the battle for third place and Champions League qualification.

Image

And on the last day of the season evesham's Triestina did all they could, but they narrowly lost at Milan while fourth-placed Fiorenzuola defeated SSC Bari away from home to leapfrog Triestina and grab that much-coveted third place. And fifth-placed Fano demolished Lazio (5-2) and also moved up one place to fourth.

Image

► Show Spoiler

And then the news arrived that runners-up Atalanta had lost their last game of the season to Internazionale, allowing Fiorenzuolo to grab second place by goal difference!

Image

Image

What an unexpected and superb end to the season for Redknapp69's Fiorenzuola! But also, what a huge disappointment for marimo's Fano and even more so for evesham's Triestina, who not only lost the Coppa Italia Final to Avellino, but who also just failed to qualify for Champions League football...

Wow - what a finish by our boys!

I thought we had it in us and I was gutted with last couple of updates where I though we threw the chance of a top 3 finish away

But they dug in and got the job done!

Would be nice now if my players didn't hate me and want to leave now we've got 2nd place and acheveievd CL football - what more could the feckers want for now!

Evesham - what a gutter for you on the last update!

Serie A gonna be some battle next season!

And so much pressure on the Serie B guys to all get promoted!

Great write up as ever Samsami!
