Unable To Hire Staff

Post by georged »

First season is always more difficult, but I had the same problem with a smaller team. I decided to go with the extra obstacle as yet another challenge. After two years I found a staffer willing to join my team and my delight was incomparable to anything you have ever achieved before in this game.

Now, I won’t say it is unreal to have someone from Vanuatu rejecting a move to a team in the Belgian Third Division, but in general you won’t find any staff interested in joining you.

You can look for non-players. In the Find menu select non-players and type in “Belgium”. Look for staff that way that is unemployed. You could find one interested.

You will have the same problem with players and you will have to visit each Third Division team and look for players that are not playing and/or unhappy. You also will have to look for Non-league Belgian teams and the players that are on those teams. They will want to join your club.

That is how I have been managing Haarlem in the Dutch second division. I am writing a story on it.

In the past I also played with 2020/21 Sint-Niklaas and started with two players on the team. I loaned a lot of players out of the Dutch second division, but they were all prepared to join me. It was completely unreal but eventually promoted to the highest Belgian level. During that time I scouted my own players (imo scouts are overrated in this game, you don’t need them) and had just one coach. All players suck anyway so you don’t really need more coaches. Just try to have them perform well.

4 coaches? Bloody luxury - I arrived at Liverpool and they only had two rubbish ones and one physio!

It is a problem though. How close are you to the end of the summer transfer window? More will become interested as that approaches and they haven't got their move to a desirable club. Player/coaches especially and it can sometimes be surprising who you can pick up for that role.

Unable To Hire Staff

Post by SteveV »

Cheers guys for all the replies. I am in December now and still haven't found any staff anywhere who want to join but I have managed to get a couple of Loan players in and actually bought a decent (by Belgian 3rd Div standards) striker from the wonderfully named 'Hades' :) Going well in the league, in a comfortable 2nd place half way through the season.

Now I have the problem of the club losing money really quickly, with average crowds of 900 and minimal income from Merchandising we will soon be in the red, mostly due to Ground Maintenance costs. I can't see me being able to make money from player sales in January so if the finances get really terrible what problems could that cause? I honestly have never been in such a dire situation in any previous saves.

That would explain why in my save Sint-Niklaas are bottom of the league after 16 games....with 0 points :)

Bankruptcy and having part of your stadium closed. :D

BTW, you could try manually finding staff (Find > Non-Player) and type 'No Club' for every unemployed person, or 'Belgian' for all Belgians and then check out every one at No Club - you might find someone will to join.

You’ll have to work with real small squads (say 11+reserves+2/3 more, lots of youth from free transfers and loan transfers (don’t offer wages). Try to get at least the goalkeepers on loan. The level you are on none will be good anyway. I have loads of youth and amateurs and they all came cheap and got me out of red ink within two years.

That’s the only way you’ll eventually be able to keep the club out of red ink.

If you had players when you started it should be easy to get rid of quite a lot, since the original players on the squad always seem to attract more interest than others that’ll join your team.

With Sint-Niklaas I was getting into red ink when I had 5 players on £550 wage, so I sold them all immediately and just worked with loan players an entire season.

And don’t expect instant results but be patient. That’s the fun of the puzzle.

Not sure what you want with your save though. If you want to promote as soon as possible and have no patience, use a Tapani tactic. That’ll make your squad almost invincible and they’ll promote season after season and get you in the Belgian first in two seasons.

Determination - non-players

Post by Max Force »

Where Determination is an important attribute for the players; does that also count for Ass Mans, Scouts, etc?

I didn't pay attention to it, but I thought, it's strange I select my players on that attribute, so why don't I select my staff on that same attribute as well?

There is a theory that a higher determination value for a scout bring back more search results, particularly in a new territory.

Determination - non-players

Post by Dermotron »

Staff with higher Determination tend to achieve their peak more often (which sort of doesn't make sense since CA doesn't rise). A young Coach with 7/8 for Coaching and 18 Determination tends to reach 16-20 for that attribute if they have decent CA/PA gap. Which again doesn't truly make sense due to CA being static

Scouting

Post by JLa »

Does anyone know the code behind the scouting functionality? What do the scouts look for? I'm always confused when my scouts recommend me a 29 year old, very average central defender. Like, why him? Do scouts see hidden attributes and maybe recommend players partly from that?

But, a neat thing I realised is that players recommended by scouts are usually available for transfer without a ludicrous fee and are willing to sign for me. So at least there's that..

Scouting

Post by stephenrirving »

Frequently the board won't release the money to sign a player if "they know very little about this player". Therefore he has to be scouted.

Scouting

Post by nosoupforu »

I add all the players to my short list that scouts say good or excellent signing. After all scouts complete their search, I compare the footballers at the same position in my short list. Then I transfer the best ones. By doing this I never failed in transfer.

Questions & Comments That Don't Warrant a Thread

Post by Jack Stein »

I have just taken the job at Cove Rangers and there is a 'ghost' manager. I'd just ignore it but he's also taking up a coaching spot.

Had a look in the Graham Kelly editor but couldn't see any obvious way of killing him off. He's in the Cove list twice but it says he's the Doncaster manager which is correct. I updated and saved both clubs but that didn't do anything.

Does anyone know how to correct the problem? Cheers.

I’ve never found a way. Even tried an add manger to take the ghosts job and then retire. You just get an unemployed ghost manager

Post by Jack Stein »

Thanks Kingsley. This might be causing even more problems than I thought. Just tried to recruit a new coach and even though there's a vacant space the game told me there was no room so ghost manager may be taking 2 spots.

I'll keep an eye out in Div 1 jobs and just jump ship I think. Got a 9 point gap to overcome in 10 games and it's looking a bit dodgy anyway!

Staff Attributes

Post by pipedown27 »

Hi all,

I'm starting a new game but I always like to add another staff member in under my own name as a Manager with no club and I watch his progress through the game as I manage my own team.

I've noticed that he always seems to play Tackling - Normal in the team instructions.

I remember an old thread on the old forum explaining which staff attributes affected all of their in game decisions.

For example, to play short passing you give them 5 in the 0-20 for Directness in the editor.

Does anyone know what stat to change so that he plays Tackling - Hard?

Thanks for any help

Finding good staff outside the top clubs

Post by ike2112 »

I am wondering how best to find the best staff - coaches, scouts, assistant managers. People have pulled together videos of their top 10s, or espousing the qualities of Giorgos Pomaski...

But when I'm managing one of my favourite clubs - Dunfermline Athletic or Derby County, or some other mid-tier or lower side, it seems impossible to find anyone.

David Cross at Oldham, with 15 for Coaching Outfield, has been about the best option I could find.

But I wasn't sure if staff, like players, will rise and develop during the game and if there's known young gems to look out for?

I just go to the player/staff search and filter on any scouts with more than "15" for example for judging player ability/potential etc

Same for Coaches for whatever value you are focusing on (i.e looking for 18+ for coaching goalkeepers etc if you wanted a goalie coach)

I also choose the "interested" box as well - this doesn't always mean some who are not interested will not join you but maybe makes things a little more realistic

Yes, this can/will happen with staff also. There are staff who, like players, will have a low CA but high PA and their CA will rise over time towards their PA. I'm not sure if the values are the same exactly for staff but lots of young players have 0, -1 or -2 set as their PA which means that their ability will vary between saves. One save "player x" is brilliant then the next save they're not as good - this is why. The reason I'm banging on about it is that it is the same for young staff. You can have one save where "32 year old coach" is the best coach you can possibly hire, he will become one of the best coaches in the game, but on another save he's not so good. My point being it is difficult to say for sure "this young coach is awesome and will for sure have a high PA".

There's only one way I know of to be sure - and it is tedious! That would be to use the GK save game editor to look at the PA of various staff. You will find hidden gems like you would using CM Scout to find young players with high PA's, the difference being you have to search through GK Editor for each staff name individually...hey I did say it would be tedious! There is no staff searcher like there is player searcher, at least to my knowledge...

Finding good staff outside the top clubs

I just filter by interested and hire the guys with the best numbers whilst keeping a balance of General, Fitness and Technical. For fitness coaches it’s always worthwhile to look at interested *scouts* to see if any have better coaching atts than the coaches - they will always take a coaching role and are normally cheaper as well. Prioritise coaching roles over scouting roles as scouts are ****ing useless anyway whilst coaches are necessary.
At that level if you think someone is good, sign them up immediately on a 10 year deal. That way you’ll get big compo for them if someone else tries to poach them.
If someone attempts to poach your staff and you want to keep them, offer them a new contract: they will often stay even though you are paying them less than the team who tried to steal them.
On the flip side, be utterly ruthless with your staff as you rise up the levels and look to trade them in for better by checking in on the interested staff a couple of times a year.
At the beginning of any .68 save Spencer Field, Rob Campkin (I think) and Dean Gripton will come to almost any club and can be your scouts forever. Look for them via staff search by name if you can’t see them in the interested list. Dean was actually credited as a researcher for the game but sadly doesn’t seem to have any ‘special powers’ as a result.
For a coach or ass man you can’t go wrong with Alan Irvine who has zero rep at the beginning so can be easily hired. I hired him at First Div St Mirren recently so he should defo come to Dunfermline. There’s an ancient French gk with great coaching stats who you just give a squad rotation player / coach deal to and wait for him to retire end of season 1 - again I hired him with St Mirren and I’ve brought him to Australia before so again he will go anywhere. Gerasimets is also normally a great coach and still useful as a player but he won’t get a uk work permit.
Worst comes to worst go into the non league teams of the country you are playing in and go through their staff; they may not show up on the interested list but many will come.

On a final note, staff attributes can improve but they can also go backwards. I find that staff who aren’t native to the country they are coaching in often lose 1-3 points off their coaching atts over a season. It tends to stabilise at this lower level, ie they don’t keep getting worse, but it is really annoying. I’ve never seen anyone have dramatic gains, at best an improvement of 1 point in each important attribute.

I do this - and get only 5 results and none of them are actually interested in accepting terms.

Instead I actually went through every single L1, L2 and Conf side until I found people listed as Coach with over 15 for outfield and offered them - and of those, only David Cross of Oldham accepted.

After a year it seems more appear in the lower leagues, some of the existing coaches stats seem to increase too so you can then find more. But that first season is terrible and I find my players just do not develop well as I don't have very good coaches and can't bring any good ones in either.

There seems to be a bug when the game starts for staff. I tried testing by adding a ton low PA, low rep staff and I think the amount available dropped instead of increasing :D

By the end of October there is generally enough available even at lower levels.

I did a rather impractical test too - took a save game and fast-forwarded it through 6 months, 1 year, to the end of 2nd season and to May 3rd season.

What I found is that actually the staff attributes don't just gradually rise as the players do in a lifelike manner... they alter drastically overnight.

Gus Caesar at Hong Kong Rangers for example as a player-manager; stats are honking. 8 and 9 for coaching keepers and outfield, 6 and 10 for judging player ability and potential.
By year 3, he's 20/20/16/20 on those same stats. In fact stats-wise he's not far off the best in the game (yet Poor reputation, so I never was sure if that meant actually the stats didn't mean as much).
I thought maybe its a player-coach bug...

But Chris Smith of Aberystwyth, 5/9/11/9 becomes 14/19/20/19 right after the first 'updating game' in June 2002.

I'm wondering if its entirely random who has these sudden extreme rises, or if like Maxim and Cherno, its predictable...

Use CMExplorer (available in the Downloads section).

A lot of staff won´t be shown in 'Staff Search'. Open an uncompressed saved game in CMExplorer, choose 'staff' on your left, then filter the staff on the right. If I don't filter the results by role (physio, scout, etc), the program crashes (but I'm using wine on Linux).

Then you can sort the staff by current ability and you'll be sure to find some gems in lower rep. teams. Remember their names, write them down or take a screenshot and use 'Find Non-Player' in the game to offer them a contract.
